I was reading the thursday Straits Times on sports column and something caught my attention. Which lead me to writing this entry. You might wonder, "What was it actually about that got me interested". Well it wasnt about the Great Eric Cantona life. But instead, it was what he said to the media about the teenage prodigy Wayne Rooney. It went like this:
"I love Rooney as a player, But I am a bit worried. He can become the best player in the world at 25, 26, if he knows that in football you need to train hard, go to bed early, be careful what you are eating, what you are drinking, what you do in life."
Eric later carry on when he gave an example of another clinical striker Robbie Fowler. Once regard as the new Ian Rush by many Liverpool supporters when he was at 18. Eric continued, " Fowler was so good at 18, and four, five year later, at 23 or 24, finished, not even playing regularly for England, not even for the best teams. Why?".... " Clubs should ask why this kind of player is out. They say in England it is very difficult because of the media pressure. But it is not more difficult than in Italy, Spain or Brazil,"
And here is something which even I myself have to agree on what Eric said.... "You drink to forget? Forget what? Because the pressure is difficult? What is difficult?, You are paid to play your dream, the dream you had when you were five. Do you need to go to pub and drink? Don't you think it is more difficult for people who work very hard from 8am to 6 in the evening? Some players are clever enough( Zidane, Keane etc). They realise that. You cannot be a great player without training hard."
Indeed Cantona was by far one the greatest footballer if not the best to ever play in the EPL. Take the next statement from Eric, " I was the first at training and last out of training at Man Utd because I wanted to practise everything for the game. I was ambitious to play better every time. I achieved a lot." Indeed, not only he achieved a lot, but he also make himself a legend not only in the eyes of Man Utd supporters but throughout the globe among football fans as well.
So why do I bother taking this article out when I can tell u to refer to the paper? Well does all this reflect our lives too? Think for a second, read the last statement from Eric. What does it tell you? He was commited, He trained hard, he was ambitious and he loves the sport which he picked when he was young. This is no different from any other jobs. Where ever you go, whatever you do in the working world, the same rules apply. That is discipline, determined, ambitious and hard work. Because they are the the key to ur success and at the same time it helps you to become a better person. All of us have our direction and ambition. We put a lot of effort and perseverance through the years to get our dream. And it would be a pity if we throw it all away. Value ur life. Its too dear to lose such a thing.
